F. Don Smith

F. Donelson (Don) Smith is a research professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received a B.S. in Chemistry in 1962, an M.S. in Industrial Management in 1964, both from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1978. He worked as a scientific programmer at the atomic energy laboratories in Oak Ridge, Tenn., from 1963 to 1965, prior to joining IBM. At IBM, from 1965 until his retirement in 1997, Dr. Smith held a number of technical and management positions, most of them in networking product development at Research Triangle Park, N.C.
