Steve has been active in both industry and academia. In industry, he joined IBM in the networking division in 1984 where he developed products, technology and standards. He later moved into IBM's x86 server organization to focus on clustering by being systems architect, and later CTO, of BladeCenter and defining Infiniband as an initial cluster interconnect standard. Steve continued to develop next generation systems, technology and standards and was later asked to join the IBM Research Next Generation Computing team as chief system architect, which included the development of a multicore processor for edge-of-network systems and applications for which he was designated an IBM Fellow.
